Scholar’s Preparation Guide for English III, English III Honors, English IV, and AP English Literature and Composition

English III: This course will focus on reading and comprehending a chronological survey of American Literature. Students should be prepared to write a variety of essays based on materials read and discussed in class.

 

English III Honors: This course will focus on reading and comprehending a chronological survey of American Literature. While English III Honors students will follow a similar course of study as that of English III students, there are some important differences. Honors students will read more materials independently, conduct more research, write more in-depth essays, and explore the culture and values of significant historical periods in America’s literary past.

 

English IV: This course will focus on reading and comprehending a chronological survey of British Literature. Students should expect to write at least one research paper and conduct at least one research-based project, as well as writing a variety academic essays. The focus of the class will be on college and career readiness.

 

AP English Literature and Composition: This course aligns to an introductory college-level literary analysis course. Students are expected to read college level works independently and come to class prepared to discuss these works in depth. The bulk of a student’s grade will be based on writing expository, analytical, and argumentative essays based on assigned and independent readings. The College Board website has great advice for AP students who wish to explore further.

 

Suggestions for all students to better prepare for any upper level English class:

 

1.       Know the basics: Review Standard English rules; very little instruction time will be devoted to teaching basic grammar skills. Most students have problems with comma and pronoun use, so almost everyone will need to review the Standard English rules for these two areas. If you know you have other weak areas, it will be your responsibility to review those areas, as well.

 

2.       Time management: Buy or create a daily “to-do” guide/calendar, so you can keep up with the assignments and due dates for work in your English class. Being habitually late and missing deadlines is not tolerated; you will have at least a week or more notice before a paper or project is due, and it will be your responsibility to have the work completed and turned in on time.

 

3.       Always do your best work. You can only perform at the level you practice. If you read carelessly and hurriedly and turn in written work with grammar and organizational errors, then when it comes time to take important tests or write important papers in class, you will not have the needed skills to perform well. ALWAYS practice at your top level if you want to perform at your top level.

 

4.       Build your reading comprehension skills: Read challenging, college-level materials as often as possible and check your comprehension by visiting reliable websites that may offer summaries of and discussions about  materials you have read.
